Screen Cuba will be sharing films made by students in Havana, showing them at The Children’s International Film Festival in Kingston this June. One highlight will be the screening of Una Aventura de Elipidio Valdés, provided by ICAIC.

Silvia Padrón, who runs a project that promotes film and comics among Cuban children, met last month with the founder of Ciné Schools, George Young, and confirmed an exchange screening of films made by her initiative. The daughter of Cuban animation pioneer Juan Padron, will also join us in Kingston on the 6th of June where she will present some of her father’s animations at special screenings.

Silvia Padron, Director at La Manigua Cultural and Creative Centre in Cuba, said, “The Children’s International Film Festival is a truly exciting opportunity for educators making films with children around the world. It will offer us a platform to show the world how creative children are and how they have embraced new technology and media to tell their stories.”

Young said, “Silvia is a shining light for children’s creativity in Cuba, teaching and empowering children to animate and make films whilst spreading her father, Juan Padron’s legacy as a pioneer of Cuban animation. She will be a big part of #CIFFEST2025 more on that to come!”

“This relationship will give insight into an entirely different culture and we are so excited to start this relationship. We are so lucky to have a Cuban submission to screen at The Children’s International Film Festival alongside films from as far away as Alaska, Cambodia, Nepal and Ukraine, to name just a few. All the films we showcase will be made by children, telling stories about their lives, culture and homes,” Young continued.
